Hatfield McCoy Five Things Friday

1) Hatfield McCoy Family Feud

One of America’s most noted family feuds involved two families of the West Virginia – Kentucky  area along the Big Sandy River. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Hatfield while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolf McCoy. Those involved in the feud were descended from Ephraim Hatfield (born c. 1765) and William McCoy (born c. 1750). The feud has entered the American folklore for any bitterly feuding rival parties. More than a century later, the feud has become synonymous with the perils of family honor, justice, and revenge. The feud stemmed from the Civil War.

2) Hatfield McCoy Marathon Story

My latest addition to my race calendar is the Hatfield McCoy Marathon coming up in 3 weeks.

The Hatfield McCoy Marathon was founded in 2000 . Our inaugural race began with just 13 runners. Now we welcome over 1,000!  Whether you want to complete 26.2 miles, 13.1, a Double Half, or even a 5K, the Hatfield McCoy Marathon has something for you! Plus, if you are a “50 Stater” you can choose either West Virginia or Kentucky as the race state because you’ll be running through BOTH!

I’m looking forward to scratching West Virginia off my list of 50 states.  I have Kentucky reserved for a different race in the near future. I’ll be driving up to Williamson, WV with Marathon Maniac Friend Brian who joined me for the Little Rock Marathon, Wisconsin Marathon, and Kalamazoo Marathon.  He’s always fun to hit the road with.

3) Hatfield McCoy Marathon Elevation

I’ve heard nothing but great things about this race and the course.  I’m trying to work on downhill running during my training.  I’m a little worried about miles 7 & 8. Look at that elevation chart!

4) Hatfield McCoy Marathon Medal

This is the 2013 marathon medal.  It’s a little on the small side, but looks to be great detail.  In addition to most of the posts I’ve read that include an H&M Marathon Mason Jar this will be a great addition to my medal rack.

5) Hatfield McCoy Marathon Giveaway

Another marathon means another Pick a Mile Giveaway! Last month I kick started fundraising for St. Jude with a pick a mile giveaway for the Wisconsin & Kalamazoo Marathons. Look for details with in the next week for my next raffle opportunity.  I don’t like to give hints…
