For a few days we have watched as the weather forecasts we’re calling for cold, ice, light snow today for the Blues Marathon and the unfortunate decision came late last night to cancel the 10th running of the Mississippi Blues Marathon. The 2012 Blues was my first marathon and today (exactly 5 years later) was supposed to be my 41st full marathon.
Here’s the reality of a winter storm in Mississippi. Snow plows are nonexistent, salt is nonexistent, ice causes many problems that are unavoidable. It’s an unfortunate circumstance, but definitely the right decision to be made. A few locals that live along the race route were posting pictures this morning, like this view of mile 24. Hills fully covered in ice.
In his email last night the race director stated that a discount for the 2018 event would be made available and more information would become available later.
As a member of the 2017 Blue Crew Ambassador team I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with the race throughout the year on promotion across the socials and see some of the development and race prep. I can’t imagine the race director was happy with his decision to cancel because he not only cares about his event, but he also loves running and the city of Jackson.
I will be running the First Light Marathon in Mobile, AL tomorrow, the are offering a 20% discount on entry to all Blues runners to join in. But getting to Mobile may be a bit tricky, here’s a shot of the current interstate situation in Jackson.
