WDW 10k Race Recap

Day 2 of the Dopey Challenge came earlier than the first.  The race was set to start at 5:30 am so we had to adjust all of our alarms back to 3:15 to make it to the shuttle and to the start area.  I was looking forward to the 10k race most of all for the weekend.  In order to run in the Crescent City Classic 10k in New Orleans this April, you must qualify by finishing another 10k in under 45 minutes within the last year.  The only 10k distance races I have ever run have been during runDisney events and haven’t ran one since August of 2013.  So I was geared up for this event to really push myself and qualify for CCC.  The weather outside was still cold but the wind wasn’t as prominent as the day before.  We lined up in the same starting corral areas and awaited the command to start the race.  Normally, I hang out in the middle of the corrals but today I was in the first 2 or 3 lines of people.

The race course exited the Epcot parking lot to the left for the first mile before hairpinning back onto Epcot Center Drive over the course of the first 3 miles.  We entered the World Showcase in the same place as we did during the 5k the day before and circled around the showcase before turning and making our way back out around the Boardwalk area.  The Boardwalk is always one of my favorite parts of any runDisney event.  As soon as we entered the Boardwalk, outside of the ESPN Clubhouse was a rare character stop, Football player Mickey! I can never resist the urge to stop for a Mickey picture.  Luckily I was still running in the top couple hundred of people and there weren’t lines for the characters.

We exited the Boardwalk and back into Epcot, circling through the Land before coming around Spaceship Earth and into the finish chute. I crossed the finish line in 44:07! It’s easy to see the difference in effort level that I was exerting from the day before when I finished the 5k in 46:09.

I was elated to qualify for Crescent City and even more excited to see on the final results page that I had finished 130 overall! After the race I stopped to check in with my pal Dopey before heading back to the resort for a quick nap before heading back out into the parks for another day of Disney magic!
